EncyclOSpedia:About

From EncyclOSpedia

This website's purpose is to help you choose an Operating System, like Microsoft Windows, MacOS X, Linux and others.

Along with that, this wiki also has articles on Operating Systems' history, Desktop Environments, and other usefull programs.

EncyclOSpedia's goal is to grade Operating Systems according to a few criteria, without giving them an overall grade, as there is no perfect OS for everybody, but only OSs that are better for each type of user.

Here are the criteria:

[edit] Usability

- Speed: how easy it is to use you computer fast, without having to browse through complicated menus.

- Ease: How "user-friendly" it is (action buttons where you want them, easy to find links, never asks you complicated questions you do not know the answer to, etc.). This generaly goes with a diminushing speed (in "usability" and "program effectiveness")

- Configureability: The OS is open to modifications to be adapted to the user.

[edit] Program effectiveness

- Boot Speed: How fast it takes your computer to turn on.

- Loading Speed: how fast it takes for your computer to load prgrams .

- Stability: An OS is stable if it does not have bugs.

- Vulnerability: How vulnerable is it toViruses and other malware.

[edit] Other

- Look & Feel: The OS's theme. Screenshots acompany the page so you can see for yourself.

- Installation: How easy it is to install

On top of that, there is also a list of features and strains on all OSs:

- Platforms: Which computer architecture can the OS work on. Not sure what is your computer's architecture? Click here.

- Desktop Environments: Most open source Operating Systems have the same DEs. Also, some of them have several DEs.

- Open source / Proprietary

- Cost

To make a new page, it is higly sugested that you use the template

This site is a wiki. If you have any knowledge on a particular OS, you can help this website to expand by modifying an entry or adding a new one, but please help us make the wiki logical: Pages dealing with a particular OS are named OS:<os_name>, pages on the history of an operaying system are called History:<os_name>, pages on a kernel are named kernel:<kernel_name>, pages on a desktop environment are called DE:<de_name>.
