The Ubuntu project is an open source operating system sponsored by Canonical Ltd. that aims to make an easy to use and stable OS. It can be sent freely using Shipit.
A version with the K desktop environment (KDE) called Kubuntu is also very popular.
The current version is 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

There is a manga about Ubuntu, called Ubunchu. This manga is about three students is a sys-admin club learning to use Ubunchu. It features the cheerful Mac user Risa Shinna, the otaku Masato Midou, and the tsundere-like UNIX user Akane Kisaragi. Only one episode has been written: Episode 1: Then, The OS has landed.
